When I’m approached about giving people SEO tips, the first thing I talk about is content.  Nothing is as important as having unique, well written, accurate information that focuses on your keyword or keyword phrase.  The next thing, is to build your backlink network.  You’re aiming for quality here for certain.  If the reason for a site to link to you isn’t obvious, then it’s not a link you want or need.  Use your keyword or keyword phrase as your link when you do link to an appropriate site.  Be sure to post fresh content frequently.  Search spiders like fresh text.  If your site doesn’t need updating often, consider adding a blog and try to blog at least three times a week to feed the crawlers and get the most from them.
