A computer operator is involved in data entry work, application backups, and may also be required to answer help desk calls, as requested. A computer operator may also be responsible for maintaining computers and related equipments, monitoring system consoles, and performing operator preventive maintenance on peripheral equipment. Other duties include reporting document system abnormalities, performing scheduled system tasks such as database dumps, spool dumps, inventories, tape switches, and RACF reports. A computer operator may also be responsible for testing the integrity of new software and maintain solid working knowledge of all aspects of the computer systems. A computer operator is expected to prepare word processing and excel documents with extensive tabular statistical information, template proficiency, and may be required to create and manipulate spreadsheets. A computer operator should have passed high school or be a diploma holder. Experience in similar job or a bachelor’s degree is an advantage. Knowledge of A+, NET+ or Security+ is a plus. A computer operator handles multiple tasks simultaneously, list priority tasks, and completes specified tasks under strict deadlines. A computer operator works independently and rotates shifts to cover the 24/7 operations. A computer operator has the ability to listen, isolate, research, resolve, and follow-up issues. Basic knowledge of and experience with standard word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and scheduling productivity applications is important. Familiarity with MS Office or other computer office suites is essential. Working knowledge of P/Cs, LANS, and AS/400 is also a plus.
